Camp Gibbous is a specialized weekend
summer camp for teens with sickle cell disease
and is an extension of Camp Crescent Moon,
the nation's first and oldest summer camp for
children with sickle cell disease.

Camp Gibbous is the only weekend camp available for teens with
SCD in the state of California

Why was Camp Gibbous created?
  • We saw a need in the sickle cell community
  • After Camp Crescent Moon we started seeing a cycle
    • We lost touch with many campers and parents
    • Campers would cry their last year of camp crescent moon because there weren’t any other programs for their age group
  • To offer a program for teenagers living with SCD
  • To help each teenager transition properly from pediatric care to adult care
  • TO EMPOWER OUR TEENS with knowledge to soar into adulthood. We want to ensure that they discover the ways to lead a positive and productive life with this adversity.

Why the name "Gibbous"?
The definition of “gibbous” refers to a moon in between a half-moon but less than a full moon.
The teens chose this name to illustrate the many transitions they will endure as young adults. One being their transition from Camp Crescent Moon to Camp Gibbous and the transition from pediatric to adult care.

Who is eligible to attend?
  • Teens with SCD only - ages: 15-17
  • All SC Crew (SCDF Teen Transition Program) members have a guaranteed spot
  • Maximum capacity of Camp Gibbous - 50 campers
  • All campers are required to have a current physical (completed within 6 months of the camp start date)
